About

Proving that sensual, spiritual jazz can come from icy Norway, the Tord Gustavsen trio stormed onto the jazz scene in 2003 with its debut recording, ‘Changing Places’. ‘The Ground’ in 2005 took the band one step further and topped the pop charts in Norway, an unprecedented achievement for a jazz group.

Such is the arresting beauty of Tord Gustavsen's sound, it's no surprise that his albums have captured a significant following, surpassing even those of other rarified artists on the famed ECM label – making him a piano superstar across the Continent, in Japan and the USA. But the Norwegian pianist doesn't live on beauty alone.

His sculpted playing, which draws strongly on his church background with its tidy gospel voicings, also incorporates Spanish and South African accents. It has a kind of liquid weight that brings to mind Ethan Iverson of the icon-bashing The Bad Plus group, as markedly different as they are stylistically.

Undoubtedly one of the great success stories of jazz in the last seven years, Tord makes his Cork Jazz Festival debut by introducing to Irish audiences the quartet version of his acclaimed ensemble. It features the significant addition of superb Norwegian saxophonist Tore Brunborg, who draws on Jan Garbarek's haunting tone and adds a distinctive folk sensibility to Gustavsen's mesmerising melodies.

LINE UP FOR CORK:
Tord Gustavsen (piano), Tore Brunborg (saxophones), Mats Eilertsen (bass) and Jarle Vespestad (drums)
