About

Musician, bandleader, composer, producer, activist, triple-Grammy Award winner, Charlie Haden is one of the most significant and influential musicians in jazz history. A double bassist of iconic talent, Haden has performed with some of the most important names in jazz including Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny.

Having contributed pivotal music to a wide scope of genres including avant garde, Latin, big band, world music, folk and gospel, Charlie Haden's instinctive and imaginative transcendence of musical boundaries has reshaped jazz bass playing, reflecting his guiding philosophy towards life and music. Born in Shenandoah, Iowa, Charles Edward Haden began his life in music at the tender age of 22 months, singing on his parents’ country & western radio show. He started playing bass in his early teens and eventually left America’s heartland for Los Angeles.

“This is the first town that I came to when I left high school in Missouri,” he recalls. “I came to L.A. just to find Hampton Hawes. And when I got there in 1956, there were a lot of jazz clubs and there were a lot of great musicians on the scene. It was a lot like New York in that respect -- lots of after-hours jam sessions, and playing as much as you could play. Those were definitely exciting times.” And Los Angeles, especially Hollywood and its classic movies have influenced Haden quite a lot, as expressed in the work of his romantic jazz project Quartet West.

The legendary Charlie Haden brings his brilliant Quartet West to Cork for the first time as part of its 25th anniversary tour. Exploring uncommonly heard jazz standards and the nostalgic soundtracks of film noir, Quartet West has attracted international praise for its melodic invention and beauty under Haden's direction

Haden's vision for Quartet West recognises the beginning of modernism in jazz. Along with lush forties pop ballads and lilting originals by Haden or Alan Broadbent, the Quartet’s elegant “noir” infused, bop-oriented style, and stellar instrumentalists, perfectly evoke a sense of place like no other band.
