 DIA DE LOS MUERTOS PARADE

THURSDAY 25TH OCTOBER, 7PM

Working with Cork Community Artlink, this year’s Festival Parade will be themed with Dia De Los Muertos, celebrating the beauty of life and death! Fun for all the family as major floats, dancers, musicians and performers weave their way through Cork city enveloping a New Orleans Funeral Procession with live improvising jazz musicians paying homage to the great artists of Jazz gone from this world… Full of colour and magic, this Parade is sure to entrance people of all ages!

 ‘UNITY’ WITH THE DAVID DUFFY QUARTET, LIVE AT ST. LUKE’S

FRIDAY 26TH OCTOBER, 9.30PM

For the first time, the Festival has commissioned an immersive audio visual experience fusing Jazz, contemporary classical music and electronica juxtaposed against the beautiful setting of St Luke’s church. Stunning 4k microscopic projections, an impressive lighting show, and a live jazz quartet unite to accentuate this year’s programme, asking us to examine what it is that connects, unifies and binds us. ‘Unity’ will be performed by The David Duffy Quartet comprising of four musicians on the fringes of Jazz.  REQUIEM FOR THE TRUTH – NANO NAGLE’S GOLDIE CHAPEL  

SATURDAY  27TH & SUNDAY 28TH OCTOBER 8PM

For those theatre buffs in the world, the Festival is also presenting a live theatre and jazz show, Requiem for Truth in Nano Nagle’s Goldie Chapel. Truth, we are told, is dead. If so, then who organises the funeral? Stomptown Brass, the outrageously energetic 10-piece street-funk band, and Collapsing Horse, the most exciting young theatre company in Ireland, invite you to join them as they take on an audacious task: to host a funeral for the Truth. Witness the colourful exuberance of the Haitian Voodoo-inspired New Orleans jazz funeral as it smashes up against the mournful, solemn ceremony of Roman Catholicism. An extravagant, chaotic street party, with a dark twist. Tickets are €15

 JAZZ MEMORIES WITH THE IRISH EXAMINER – TRISKEL ARTS CENTRE 

ALL WEEKEND

Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie … just a few of the legends who’ve appeared at the Cork Jazz Festival through the years, and just three of the names who’ve been photographed in the city by the Irish Examiner. ‘Jazz Memories’ exhibition at Triskel Arts Centre in Cork features over 20 pictures from the Irish Examiner/Evening Echo archive of the early days of the festival.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO READING MUSIC… A talk given by Dr. Ian Darrington MBE. If you’ve ever wondered what all those weird looking shapes are on a piece of paper, those that are turned into beautiful music, well here’s your chance to find out. Suitable for people of all ages (from the young to the not so young) and all levels of musical knowledge. Come along and learn how it all works!

I DON’T LIKE JAZZ, BUT….! A talk given by Dr. Ian Darrington MBE. A beginners guide to listening to jazz. So many people say they don’t like jazz and yet what they seem to mean is that they don’t like SOME jazz. This presentation is aimed at introducing jazz to suit all tastes, new pathways into listening and enjoying jazz and to providing interesting information on the vast and exciting world of jazz.

 THE PHIL COLLINS TRIO, KEEPIN’ IT FUNKY – FOTA HOUSE

THURSDAY 25TH OCTOBER, 7.30PM

A special warm up gig for the 2018 Guinness Cork Jazz Festival in the beautiful Library at Fota House. The eclectic style of the Phill Collins Trio is reflected in it’s easy versatility – Phill, Chris and Fionn craft modern interpretations of jazz and pop standards, modern jazz and funky grooves. The Trio have worked together for several years and have recorded two albums, Bucolic and Floored.
Doors are at 19:30, with an interval at 20:40. Tickets €20 including complimentary glass of wine and free parking.

Bringing transatlantic cultural exchange to the Festival this year, we’re working with the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra from New York bringing the development of Jazz musicianship and the development of the art form to the fore of the Festival’s wider outreach work in partnership with CIT Cork School of Music. A collaboration between David O’Rourke’s young New York musicians and the jazz students of the CIT Cork School of Music, led by Sarah Dewhurst and Cormac McCarthy. All free to attend! Join St. Anne’s Parish in their unique celebration of Harvest featuring Jazz provided courtesy of St. John’s Gospel Choir and the Bla Mandaag Brassband.  SACHAL VASANDANI VOICE WORKSHOP, VOICEWORKS STUDIO, SOUTH TERRACE

MONDAY 29TH OCTOBER, 11.30-2PM

A once in a lifetime opportunity to work with Jazz superstar Sachal Vasandani along with Ireland’s singing sensation, Gemma Sugrue. These vocal powerhouses give an intimate vocal workshop in the heart of Cork city bringing all levels of singers to the next stage of their vocal development. Workshop costs are €40 for participating students and €20 to attend as a non-participating member.

 POETRY JAZZ SESSION, THE HAYLOFT BAR, UPSTAIRS AT THE LONG VALLEY, WINTHROP STREET.

MONDAY 29TH OCTOBER, 9.30PM

Ó Bhéal has hosted a jazz-poetry night since 2008 to coincide with the Cork Jazz Festival. It’s one of the series’ most popular events. The night begins as usual at 9.30pm with the five word challenge, followed by guest poet Sex W. Johnston / John W. Sexton who will be accompanied by jazz musician, Darragh Hennessy who will also play improv to the later open-mic session, so feel free to bring along your favourite poem and have it shallow fried in sweet jazz!

There will be a number of pop-up shows at some local schools and hospitals on the week running up to the festival – be sure to keep your ears peeled!
